Winning a contract competition about designing unicorn toys for an established intellectual property.
For our client TCC, a group of designers and myself were tasked with creating a toy product for a brand focusing on unicorns with gems that gave them special powers. This toy needed to be collectable, have a collecting album and cost around 10p to make. It would later be used as ‘free’ loyalty rewards in shops. I worked primarily on the toys as my colleagues did the album. The end result is a gem shape that has augmented reality emblems on the sides and sections that pull out like a Swiss army knife. This maximises playability by combining three main types of toys:
Online play and the continual addition of digital content.
Generic shape for a board game-like play.
Posable limbs allow for imaginative role-play.
This design then moved onto the use of augmented reality to create further interaction with the toys themselves and increasing the unique aspect of each toy encouraging further collecting. In the end, the toy cost 6.2p to manufacture. Due to its low price and maximum play aspect, the concept won first prize against other groups with the same brief.
